Frequently Asked Questions

How long do they live? Mini pigs have an average lifespan of 12-15 years. Now of course this is based off their diets, environment, breeding, vet care, etc

How big do they get? When answering this question I always like to give out the average sizing which is around knee height and about the length and width of a bulldog. They carry their weight much different than a dog, thins making them very sturdy animals. There will be NO pig under 60 pounds. The average weight is 80+ pounds.

How well do they get along with other animals? Pigs do well with other animals IF they are properly socialized and the right training keeps consistent throughout the life of the pig. As a general rule, NEVER leave pigs and dogs unattended. This is just an accident waiting to happen. Pigs and dogs do not speak the same language and both are a dominate animal. A pig will not understand what a growl means where as a dog will not understand what a low grunt means. Very often we see and hear of dogs attacking a pig or the other way around due to being left unattended with each other. This is why crate training your pig is so important when there are other animals in the home.

How long can they be left alone in the house? As stated above you want to make sure that you are crate training you pig for the times that you are at work or not able to watch your pig. A bored pig becomes a destructive pig. As for the duration of time, an average work day is how long my pigs are alone (same as my dogs). Just make sure they have time in the mornings to get out of their crates before you leave for work. As soon as I am home from work all my animals are our of their crates until its bedtime.

Annual Vet fees on average? This will depend on your vet. Deworming is pretty inexpensive and you can do that at home twice a year. Annual check ups will determine on your vet for cost. They will need their hooves trimmed. If you are not comfortable doing this on your own you will need a vet to do it for you, therefore that will be another vet cost for you. Males will also require their tusks to be trimmed. This will require a vet visit once to every two years (depending on the tusks growth rate) if you are not comfortable filing them at home.

How much damage to a house do they do?  Are they prone to mischief? How much damage they do to a home is dependable on if they are bored or left unattended. Like any animal or child, if they are bored they will find their own thing to do and often times what they think is fun, you probably will not. People who have good success with their pigs are the ones who keep their pigs occupied and interact with them throughout the day, every day! There are MANY good enrichment ideas on the internet to help keep your pig busy on the days where they are unable to spend time outside. How long do they live?
