General information you will need to know about Hedgehogs
Hedgehogs are a nocturnal animal. This means they are most active during the night and sleep most of the day. Hedgehogs love for explore and dig for grubs in the wild. It’s important to provide as much stimulation to your hedgehog’s cage set up as possible to ensure a happy animal! Dig boxes with large pompoms and fleece pieces are a great example of a fun activity for your pet. Due to their activity level hedgehogs require a wheel. The best wheels are a solid wheel, with no joints holding pieces together as they often result in injuries to their feet.
Cage Space/Set Up
Hedgehogs are an active animal and due to this they require a lot of cage space. Ideally, the larger the cage the better. Providing your hedgehog with a cage space of 3-4 sq. feet as a MINIMUM space is ideal. The cage space will provide a bed area, food and water dishes, litter area and a wheel for activity. It’s important when selecting your cage to make sure it has a deep plastic bottom (minimum 6”) and the wires are not easily reached as this will encourage your hedgehog to climb the wire. If you find your hedgehog is climbing the cage, applying Plexiglas or chloroplast (poster board material) will help to prevent any attempt to climb. We do not promote keeping a hedgehog in a tank set up as they do not allow for proper ventilation.
If the cage you are choosing has multiple levels you MUST ensure the ramps are safe for your hedgehog to use by putting up ramp guards along the sides of the ramp. Hedgehogs very easily fall off the sides of levels and ramps so it is very important that all ramps and levels have side guards up that are secure to prevent injuries.
Appropriate substrate/bedding to be used in your hedgehog’s cage:
Pine shavings
Aspen
Fleece lining
Heating
Hedgehogs require a good heat source to maintain their ideal body temperature. Their cage space should be in the 74-78-degree range. If the temperature drops too low your hedgehog is at risk to a false hibernation, which leads to death. Obtaining a ceramic heating lamp (found in the reptile section of your local pet store) is an ideal heating source for your hedgehog. A 150 watt bulb will be best for most houses. We do not promote the use of heating pads as they often leave hedgehogs with burnt feet. Having a digital thermometer (also in the reptile section of your local pet store) is ideal to ensure your hedgehog’s cage is at the proper temperature.
Food
There are many different brands of Hedgehog foods you will see in pet stores HOWEVER, they are not adequately designed for proper nutrition for hedgehogs. Hedgehogs require a high protein diet, to mimic their diet in the wild. Feeding a high-quality cat food is recommended by not only hedgehog enthusiasts but also by long time hedgehog breeders.
Acceptable cat food brands for hedgehogs include:
Kirkland Adult Cat Food (dark purple bag)
Wellness Indoor Cat
Purina One Chicken and Turkey
Purina naturals
Treats
Hedgehogs can have treats in moderation. A sample of some healthy treats are cooked chicken, beef, fish or turkey (unseasoned). They also love hardboiled eggs or scrambled eggs. For live treats offering small mealworms and wax worms are always a favourite and are great to encourage foraging behaviours in their dig boxes.
