Facts on Mini Pet Pig Weight

There are many people on the internet, both in Canada and the U.S.A, claiming that their mini pigs will mature at 40 pounds. These same people are also telling the public that mini pigs are fully grown at only 1-year-old or sometimes even younger. The truth is that ALL Mini Pigs grow until they are 4-years-old. While most reach approximately 75% of their height growth within their first year, after their first birthday their growth rate slows down.

The misleading information about mini pig size is unfortunately the main reason why so many people are dissatisfied with their mini pet pig. They have purchased a new family friend expecting a specific size and when the animal out grows the 40 pounds promised, they re-home them or leave them at a shelter. All pigs are extremely intelligent and very sensitive. When they have been transferred from home to home it becomes hard for them to build trust, and some animals will become destructive, or even ill, as a result of the stress.

As ethical breeders of mini pet pigs, it is our obligation to ALL mini pigs  that we keep the public informed with accurate information regarding mini pig sizing and weights. We DO NOT want our babies re-homed due to misconceptions surrounding weight!

Please take our quiz below and see if you can guess the correct weights. You might be surprised at the difference between the weights of some of our purebred dogs and our mini breeders!

Helpful Hints:

Mini Pigs are built quite differently than a dog. Most canine breeds put on their weight throughout their torso, leaving their legs without much weight on them. A mini pig, however, will put weight on all parts of its body. This includes their neck, back, cheeks, hips, as well as on their legs! As a result mini pigs are very compact and dense animals. A 55 pound mini pig will be roughly the height and length of a cocker spaniel (a 25 lbs dog!). They are more filled out than the canine breeds of their same height and length, and this is where you get the weight from.

Pigs are pigs, and all mini pigs LOVE to eat. However, due to their small body structure it is very important not to over feed them. This will not only put on unneeded weight, but will also cause leg and knee issues as well as spinal issues from developing a sway back. Split hooves are also the most common factor of overfeeding. Please see our pages on mini pig diet for more information.

Quiz Answers:

So.... lets see how you did!

In the first picture Gemma is 2 months shy of turning 2 years old! She weighs 60 pounds in this picture! How does that compare to your guess?

In the second picture our Elly May was 11 months old! She weighed 38 pounds at the time the photo was taken.

In the third picture our little Charlotte had just turned 2 years old. She was the same height and length of my 12 pound chihuahua. But Charlotte weighs 35 pounds in this picture!

In the fourth picture our Jax is 2 months shy of turning 1 year old! He weighs 47 pounds in this picture!

How does that compare with our dogs?

Let's compare those weights to our four dogs. From left to right:
  • Gypsy, German Shepherd:4 years old and 60lbs
  • Milo, Chihuahua: 8 years old and 12lbs
  • Lucy, Chesapeak Bay Retriever: 5 years old and 50lbs
  • Diesel, Bernese Mountain Dog: 4 years old and 90lbs

Some Final Thoughts on Mini Pig Weight

During your research on mini pigs you will notice that many people advertise and claim to have 20, 30 or 40 pound "micro" mini adult pigs. We are committed to educating the public on truthful and accurate sizing of mini pigs and the truth is these pigs simply do not exist. There are breeders across the USA and Canada, who have been searching for these 20, 30, or 40 pound adult (over 4 years of age) pigs with no luck of finding them over the YEARS of looking. The hunt is still on! Still, it is very unfortunate that this misleading information is still out there.

"Breeders" who are not telling the truth will most likely NOT be there for any questions you may have after they have received your money. It is always BEST to visit the piggy parents if you are able to. If you live to far away to visit, ask for CURRENT pictures of the parents and proof of their ages. Facebook is a great way to find proof of ages as the date the picture was posted will always be there. Also remember that a picture can only tell you so much, especially about pig weight; remember our quiz!

If a breeder will not allow you for a visit or only sends you the same pictures from their website, this is a red flag. STOP! And choose another breeder. There is only a small selection of truthful and ethical breeders within Canada and the USA. Not every person who has a pig really has the true small lines. Most of them are really just breeding really young pigs!
